Contegra Builds $13M Cummins Facility to Keep Midwest Freight Moving

July 29, 2026 | The 10,000-plus truck drivers who navigate the I-270/I-255 corridor each day now have a new reason to exit: Industrial giant Cummins Inc. has opened a new trucking sales and maintenance center, located at 1540 Chain of Rocks Road in Pontoon Beach.

Built by Edwardsville-based Contegra Construction Company, the $13 million, 48,000-square-foot facility can service Cummins engines of all types.

The modern center’s expanded capacity offers another valuable service option for the area’s growing freight traffic and the increasing number of distribution centers in the nearby Gateway Commerce Center and Gateway Tradeport industrial parks.

“There are a lot of trucks around here, and we’re going to keep them up and running and keep their businesses rolling,” said Randy Dunger, general manager of the facility. “We’re here to partner with our neighbors and serve the public.”

Contegra built the facility for U.S. Capital Development and said the new center is not only a crucial addition to the growing area but also a big win for the industry.

“When you think of diesel, you think of Cummins. It’s really the pinnacle of what you want in a diesel engine,” said Josh Wilson, Contegra project manager. “Your truck is your job, so being able to go directly to Cummins in this park is a huge deal.”

Previously located in an outdated building in the North Riverfront area of St. Louis, Cummins needed a new location closer to its clients in a safer part of town.

In addition to serving its freight clients, Dunger said the company also works on fire and emergency vehicles, and the new location will allow access to additional municipalities in Illinois.

In addition to a sales office, the facility includes 13 service bays, a chassis dynamometer (a testing device to measure a vehicle’s power, torque and emissions), two overhead bridge cranes, a wash bay for engines and parts, and warehousing for lubricants.

And building from the ground up – rather than retrofitting an existing building – allowed Contegra to build a custom facility that meets the needs of Cummins’ customers today, both on-highway and off.

“This is kind of a first,” Dunger said. “Our entire building is natural gas and hydrogen-certified, which is outside the norm. Most people just have two bays for it, and they’re walled off for fire reasons. And when you do that, you kind of build silos. This allows us to maintain our open-air field without our tech worrying about what bay they’re going into.”

Wilson said the project was gratifying for the Contegra team and a welcome addition to the area.

“It was exciting to see it completed, and fun to do something a little different,” he said. “This is basically down the street from us, and we know it will contribute to even further growth in the area.”

An open house for customers and the public was held June 17.

Subcontractors on the project included J.F. Electric, Langhauser Sheet Metal Co., Fire Solutions, Haier Plumbing & Heating, Tri-State Overhead Crane, Fenix Construction and KAMEX.
